*********** 1. Viewpoint *********** Hot Spot In A Box: The Missing Wi-Fi Link Joins With Linux By Kelly Abbott and Jon Gallagher, Red Door Interactive

A large gap exists in the wireless-product lines of most network-equipment manufacturers. That gap is one of needed functionality - in other words, access points that can be configured, monitored, and secured by standard network-management... ******* 2. News ******* Wireless Pill Monitor's Vital Signs

The Mini Mitter Company has announced the release of VitalSense, a wireless medical telemtry "pill" and monitoring system. This technology was designed in partnership with the United States Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine. Phase I of this Integrated Physiological Monitoring System includes core body and skin temperature sensors. Core body temperatures are obtained from ingestible and disposable, Jonah(TM) core temperature sensors. These transducers are contained in a capsule about the size of a multi-vitamin. Once activated and swallowed, transmission begins immediately. Data are transmitted telemetrically to the VitalSense Monitor, which can be worn in a waist pack or slipped into a pocket. ******** 3. News ******** Analyzer Watches Both VoIP and Ethernet Traffic

WildPackets Inc., recently announced the release of EtherPeek VX expert VoIP network analyzer. This combination gives network engineers a single tool for troubleshooting most problems on a VoIP network, regardless of whether the problem involves voice or data. The product's feature set addresses all three phases of VoIP deployments: planning, roll-out, and ongoing maintenance. The company claims that EtherPeek VX can analyze up to 100 open calls simultaneously, without requiring any expensive hardware. The product provides per-call analytics and metrics, and supports multiple signaling protocols like SIP, H323, MGCP, SCS and more. ******** 4. News ******** Position Location Without GPS

Many camera phone users, when visiting foreign cities, often find it difficult to tell their location. Now, it is possible for camera phone users to determine their position without the use of GPS equipment. The German "Institute of Photogrammetry Bonn" has developed a software system called FotoNav that makes it possible to recognize one's location based on a photograph. The picture - typically a city landmark - is sent to a server where it is analyzed by image recognition technology. If the analysis is successful, a map is transmitted back to the camera phone showing the location of the landmark picture. National Semiconductor's Simply Blue family of fully-integrated, easy-to-use Bluetooth modules can be used as plug-and-play devices wherever a UART connection is available, or can be configured for more customized operation.

The LMX9820 UART can be customized for 8-bit to 32-bit applications. A complete Bluetooth solution, it enables connectivity via a UART serial port to support a range of applications.

******** 6. News ******** Test Company Joins SDR Research Group

Tektronix, Inc. just announced its participation with the Mobile and Portable Radio Research Group (MPRG) at Virginia Tech in the development of a Software Defined Radio (SDR) test bed and Open Source SCA (Software Communications Architecture) Implementation: Embedded (OSSIE). Tektronix will deliver test and measurement equipment to be integrated within the OSSIE test-bed framework. They will also help to define and validate future test systems and methodologies. This participation should help meet the needs of commercial and military/government customers looking to leverage SDR. There are two key Tektronix products currently integrated into the OSSIE test bed: the AWG400 - a family of Arbitrary Waveform Generators, and the RSA3308A, Real-Time Spectrum Analyzers.
