Viewpoint *********** WiMAX Calls For Broadband Revolution By David Sumi, Product Manager, Multipoint Solutions, Proxim Corp. The past year has seen renewed interest and activity in the broadband-wireless-access (BWA) industry. This flurry of activity has begun to spill over into the more mainstream networking world. It provides tantalizing glimpses of the new... News ******* In Search Of Wireless Mesh Networks Want to follow the real-time adventures of an intrepid explorer roaming through the wireless mesh jungles of Europe? Timothy J. Brown of VIA Technologies is currently traveling through Europe meeting developers of mesh networks. He has captured his experiences on his website called "Into the Mesh" through what he calls multimedia reporting (video editing, blogging, etc). Timothy's stated mission is to interact with and gain insight into people lives who live in areas covered by wireless mesh networks. Wireless mesh networks are an affordable last mile technology bringing wireless broadband connectivity to users in areas where established Telcos and ISPs for a variety of reasons (mainly economic) have chosen not to go. News ******** Semiconductor Market Faces 40 Percent Reductions The semiconductor industry has become inflated with hundreds of vendors competing in a crowded marketplace. However, within 10 years, 40 percent of today's semiconductor vendors are likely to leave the industry, according to Gartner, Inc. Gartner analysts identified five mega-trends that will lead to significant changes in the industry during the recent Gartner Dataquest Semiconductor Industry Summit. These mega-trends include increasing device integration (Moore's Law), the increasing scale and size of manufacturing, the shift from business to consumer markets, the increasing role of service providers, and new and disruptive technologies. Gartner --> http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/ehZk0CWyaL0Emn0BLiH0A2 ******** 4. News ******** Co-located Tower Sites Grow In Popularity Clear Channel Communications, Inc. recently announced that Nextel Communications Inc. has signed a five-year Master Lease Agreement (MLA) that allows Nextel to lease co-location space on Clear Channel's more than 1,300 wireless tower sites. The deal also allows Clear Channel to locate upon Nextel's 1,200 wireless sites in the United States. In 2002, Clear Channel ventured into the vertical real estate market, making thousands of towers, billboards, buildings, and entertainment venues, available for co-location of wireless antennas and equipment. Clear Channel claims that, unlike traditional tower companies, they offer their existing infrastructure without having to rely on leasing revenue to cover the cost of site acquisition and development. WiLANTA is used for online and offline testing. It provides easy setup options to select parameters like Record length, channel and instrument interface to acquire real-time I/Q base band signals. It is a simpler & cost effective alternative to RF Analyzer testing. http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/ehZk0CWyaL0Emn0BLiJ0A4 ******************************************************************* ******** 5. News ******* Multi-Platform FPGAs Satisfy Multiple Needs Xilinx, Inc. just announced the immediate availability of silicon and a complete suite of design tools for its new Virtex-4 flagship product line. This introduction provides a multi-platform FPGA family produced using 90nm/300mm chip-making process technology. Notably, the Virtex-4 family is the company's second 90nm product line. Virtex-4 encompasses more than 100 technical innovations, offering designers a choice of 17 devices across three domain-optimized platform FPGA architectures: Virtex-4 LX FPGAs (logic-intensive designs), SX FPGAs (high-performance signal processing), and FX FPGAs (high-speed serial connectivity and embedded processing). http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/ehZk0CWyaL0Emn0BLiK0A5 ******** 6. News ******** Nanometer Models Rev Up with New Parasitic Engines Mentor Graphics Corp. recently introduced new resistance and capacitance engines for its full-chip, transistor-level parasitic extraction solution, Calibre xRC. The company has also developed hierarchical netlisting and optimized back annotation capabilities between Calibre xRC and Nassda's high-performance simulation platform HSIMplus. Calibre xRC's new engines, combined with the company's LVS layout vs. schematic tools, are designed to handle nanometer effects. They provide BSIM4.0 simulation models that can accurately measure, extract and analyze these new parasitics in a geometrically accurate way with smaller netlists, helping to preserve performance, capacity and yield. International News ***************** Mobiles in Aircraft Almost Ready to Fly Soon you could be using your mobile phone on flights as easily as you do on the High Street, reports an article in the BBC News. A two-year investigation has shown that mobiles can be used on planes without interfering with navigation systems. Plane maker Airbus, which carried out the research, said the positive result paved the way for the widespread use of mobiles on aircraft. Airbus said it was planning to put in-flight mobile phone technology on its aircraft by 2006. BBC News --> http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/ehZk0CWyaL0Emn0BLiL0A6 ***************** 8. International News ***************** RFIC Firm Expands into Asia SiGe Semiconductor today unveiled its plans to expand its operations in Asia. This expansion is a response to increasing demand for its wireless power amplifiers and RF front-end solutions among consumer electronics manufacturers. Thanks to significant manufacturing efficiencies, the leading brand names in consumer electronics rely on Asian original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original design manufacturers (ODMs) to produce more and more of their products. So far in 2004, SiGe Semi has shipped more than 20 million power amplifiers and RF front-end solutions to ODMs and OEMs in China, Taiwan and Korea.
