Viewpoint *********** Enter China's Electronics Industry The Right Way By Mark Hoersten, Keithley Instruments In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the movement of manufacturing to China has been perhaps the biggest and most fundamental shift in the world economy. Any company that wants to succeed worldwide must first thrive in China. But success isn't easy to achieve. First, one must understand China and how the Chinese do business. ... News ******** Real Estate Markets Pit Wireless versus Wired Blue Wi-Fi, Inc., just announced the launch of a new suite of applications that provide high-speed, secure, private wireless networks specifically built for large residential and commercial property owners. The company claims that the costs of installing its Wi-Fi Internet-enabled network in a commercial or multi-tenant residential property is a fraction of the cost of a traditional hardwired network. Wireless networks can provide significant cost reductions that may open up an opportunity for savvy property owners to increase their property's value, differentiate their offerings and even generate additional income through increased rent and improved vacancy rates. http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/eert0CWyaL0Emn0BF3s0AG ******** 3. News ******** Group Forms Wireless Patent Licensing Pool Via Licensing Corporation, in consultation with many leading owners of critical intellectual property rights, has issued a call for essential patents reading on the IEEE 802.11 family of products. The goal of this call for patents is to identify the owners of patents that are necessary for the practice of IEEE 802.11 wireless networking. Any entity that believes it has granted patents or pending patent applications that are essential to the normative portions of the IEEE 802.11 standards is invited to contact Via Licensing Corporation in order to receive information about how to submit patents for evaluation. Via Licensing --> http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/eert0CWyaL0Emn0BF3t0AH ******** 4. News ******** Picture Messaging Grows with MMS Service LightSurf Technologies, Inc., outsourced multimedia messaging service (MMS) continues to expand. The company launched their hosted and managed multimedia messaging service with Sprint in 2002, reducing both time-to-market for new MMS services and the operator's total cost of ownership. The company claims that over 50 million people worldwide have used multimedia-messaging services powered by LightSurf with over 150 million PictureMail messages being shared in 2003 alone. The companies LightSurf 5 MMS platform powers all of their media messaging solutions, while providing full support for 3GPP, 3GPP2, and OMA standards. The outsourced MMS solution delivers a suite of basic and premium multimedia messaging applications that drive messaging uptake and revenues. News ******** Standard Cellphones Go Blue Cardo Systems, Inc., recently announced a universal adapter for the Cardo Allways, a Bluetooth-mobile phone headset. This adapter fits over a user's ear or clips onto eyeglasses or sunglasses. Once plugged into the audio jack of the phone, this compact accessory will convert standard mobile phones into Bluetooth capable devices, allowing operation with the Allways headset. Both the universal adapter and Allways headset come factory paired with 2.5 millimeter cell phone jacks and additional connectors for many older models. With a red & blue LED light, users can even indicate the charge and power on status. These devices offer high IIP2 and IIP3, outstanding port-to-port isolation, precision IQ phase and amplitude matching, excellent stability over temperature & shutdown mode. http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/eert0CWyaL0Emn0BFla0At ******************************************************************* ***************** 6. International News ***************** Japanese ATE Vendors Pull Ahead 2003 marks one of the most dramatic years for change among the Top 10 semiconductor manufacturers in the thirty-three years of VLSI Research's data archive. Big movers, Advantest and Yokogawa Electric Corporation climbed six positions and eight positions, respectively to finish 2003 with 100% sales increases. Applied Materials, Tokyo Electron Limited, and ASML rounded out the top 3 positions. Japanese suppliers performed the best in 2003, claiming seven of the Top 15 positions and 50% of the sales total for the Top 10. All seven Japanese suppliers in the Top 15 increased their sales in 2003, leading to regional growth of 36% over 2002. http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/eert0CWyaL0Emn0BF3w0AK ***************** 7. International News ***************** Europe and China Work Jointly on 3G/TD-SCDMA To mark the official start of the joint activities for 3G/TD-SCDMA mobile communication technologies, Siemens Information and Communication Mobile (Siemens mobile) and Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., recently signed a contract for the formation of the joint venture. Both companies expressed that they join forces to promote the upcoming 3G mobile communication standard TD-SCDMA. The joint venture will develop, manufacture and market TD-SCDMA technology, for which both companies are together investing more than USD 100 million. The new company will be based in Beijing. The mobile standard TD-SCDMA, which complements GSM and W-CDMA, is currently being put to the test in several trial networks. New Books ************** Death March, 2nd Edition By Edward Yourdon Publisher: Prentice Hall PTR ISBN: 013143635X At an alarming rate, companies continue to create death-march projects! What's worse is the amount of rational, intelligent people who sign up for a death-march projects whose schedules, estimations, budgets, and resources are so constrained or skewed that participants can hardly survive, much less succeed. In this book, Ed Yourdon sheds new light on the reasons why companies spawn Death Marches and provides you with guidance to identify and survive death march projects.
