Viewpoints *********** Speech Recognition Comes Of Age By Jordan Cohen, CTO, Voice Signal Technologies Speech recognition is a re-emerging technology. It survived the word-spotting '70s, the template-matching '80s, the trainable but unreliable cell-phone voice tags, and the Hidden Markov Model-based dictation programs of the '90s. Yet it only found a market in Interactive-Voice-Response-enabled call centers. Today ... News ******** Nextel and Flarion To Provide Broadband Coverage Nextel Communications Inc. just announced that the coverage area of its wireless broadband trial, now branded as Nextel Wireless Broadband(SM) service, has more than doubled since first launching in February 2004. The coverage area is now approximately 1,300 square miles and extends to Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill and other neighboring communities. The company's service is 50 times faster than dial-up connections and is accessible via laptop and desktop computers as well as PDAs. Nextel Wireless Broadband service uses Flarion Technologies' FLASH-OFDM technology, which supplies highly secure broadband access in addition to fast network speeds. This technology is Internet-protocol-friendly, which offers the ability to connect to main databases and run applications. News ******** Pew Says 1 in 6 Have Wi-Fi'd One in six U.S. Internet users have accessed the Internet wirelessly. The Pew Internet and American Life Project says that a survey shows that 63 percent of U.S. adults use the Internet, half of them at least once a day. News ******** Boingo and Linksys Join up for Wi-Fi Boingo Wireless and Linksys, a division of Cisco Systems, Inc., recently announced a joint Hot Spot in a Box program. This service makes commercial Wi-Fi hot spot business opportunities available to small businesses who have high speed wireless Internet connections. The Hot Spot in a Box feature is now available on the Linksys Wireless-G VPN Broadband Router (WRV54G), the company's small business Wi-Fi router solution. Current Linksys WRV54G customers can update their router with the Boingo Hot Spot in a Box feature at no additional charge by simply downloading new firmware from the Linksys website. News ******** Windows Mobile Developers Gain New Tools Microsoft Corp has recently unveiled its new Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition software that is designed to enable hardware innovation and application development. The company has also provided the Visual Studio 2005 Community Technology Preview that provides valuable developer resources. Microsoft has also announced a Mobile2Market contest to assist developers with application promotion and distribution opportunities. These announcements are aimed at both mobile and PC developers. International News ***************** Iraq War Sparks Wireless Row The widening gulf between the US and European countries opposed to the war has spread to the world of wireless. Which mobile standard will prevail in post-war Iraq? A band of US politicians are angered over plans to build a communication system in post-war Iraq based upon European wireless standards. Members of the US Congress are adding their names to a letter drafted by Californian republican Darrell Issa objecting to the use of US funds to build a GSM network in Iraq after Saddam has gone. They want the government to use the US-developed CDMA standard instead. BBC News --> http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/efUv0CWyaL0Emn0BHMy0AO ***************** 7. International News ***************** China Public WLAN Set For A Promising Start China has emerged as one of the most exciting markets for Public WLAN (PWLAN) in Asia-Pacific. Hotspots are appearing in airports, conference centers, hotels, coffee and teashops, fast food restaurants, railroad terminals, and other public areas in many major cities. According to IDC Asia-Pacific, China accounted for 22.4% of the region's WLAN equipment, worth about US$33 million in 2002. By 2007, China's stake will jump to 45%, worth US$166 million. Last year, the public WLAN service revenue in China came to US$2.8 million, which represents one-fifth of the Asia-Pacific total. In 2007, the figure will rise to US$48 million or 60% of the region's total. China Times --> http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/efUv0CWyaL0Emn0BHMz0AP ************** 8.
