*********** 1. Viewpoints *********** All Wireless Cellular Devices Must Be Secured By Dennis S. Lee, President, Digital Solutions and Video, Inc.

Now that cell phones and personal digital assistants (PDAs) have become such popular personal accessories, no one would ever think of banning them from the business premises. In reality, however, devices that use the cellular network may resemble Read more at --> http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/efgp0CWyaL0Emn0BHiZ0AX

******** 2. News ******** WiMAX Forum Gains IEEE 802.20 Member

Navini Networks, Inc., a provider of non-line-of-sight (NLOS), zero-install , wide-area wireless broadband technology, recently announced it has joined the WiMAX Forum. The company stated that they will add WiMAX-Certified systems to its Ripwave product portfolio and deliver its adaptive phased array antenna technology in IEEE 802.16 standards-based products. Navini believes that Revision e to the 802.16 standard which supports mobility is a key operator requirement. The company had previously been a member of the IEEE 802.20 standard, which is viewed by some experts as more of a competitor for 3G cellular services. http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/efgp0CWyaL0Emn0BHia0Ae http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/efgp0CWyaL0Emn0BHib0Af

******** 3. News ******** Software-Configurable Processor Uses C/C++

Stretch Inc, just announced the S5000 family of software-configurable processors - the first to embed powerful programmable logic within an off-the-shelf processor. The S5000 family provides a suite of development tools that enable developers to automatically configure and optimize the processor using only their C/C++ code. Stretch's software-configurable processors can be tailored quickly to address compute-intensive applications in markets as diverse as consumer, telecommunications, networking, medical and military. Every S5000 processor chip is powered by the Stretch(tm) S5 engine, which incorporates the Tensilica Xtensa RISC processor core and the Stretch Instruction Set Extension Fabric (ISEF). http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/efgp0CWyaL0Emn0BHic0Ag http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/efgp0CWyaL0Emn05ck0AJ

******** 4. News ******** Tool Aids e-911 Compliance

Bonsai Networks just announced that it has developed an advance tool that enables wireless carriers to accurately audit and measure their compliance with E-911 FCC Phase 2 regulations. The solution also supports validation of location-based technologies. Under Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations, wireless carriers are required to provide enhanced 911 (E911) services to their customers according to Phase 2 guidelines. XY-Mobile's E911 Compliance Analysis Tool provides a structured approach for inputting, managing and reporting compliance data for both current and historical testing. The tool is designed to simplify the testing process by providing a simple, intuitive user interface for creating, managing, and analyzing Test Cycles. ******** 5. News ******** Wi-Fi Pre-Certification Improves Pass Rate

To tackle poor Wi-Fi certification first-pass rate, University of New Hampshire's InterOperability Lab (UNH-IOL) offers approved pre-certification: This might sound obscure, but it's a way for companies to save potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars and weeks of work off the budget for developing Wi-Fi products. The Wi-Fi Alliance has said that 25 percent of the products reaching their labs don't pass Wi-Fi certification tests the first go-round. The UNH-IOL will provide an intermediate testing program that will allow mid-stream course correction with ostensibly less cost. Lab users must pay fees unless they support the lab directly, and must be Wi-Fi Alliance members. Wi-Fi Networking --> http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/efgp0CWyaL0Emn0BHif0Aj

***************** 6. International News ***************** Continuity Offered Between Mobile Networks and WLAN

Alcatel, Birdstep Technology, and Gemplus International, S.A., recently announced an alliance to jointly develop, promote and market a secure solution for service continuity between GSM/GPRS/EDGE, UMTS or CDMA mobile networks and WLAN. This alliance will also apply to emerging technologies such as WiMAX. This collaboration claims that users of laptops and PDAs to have an "always best connected" experience at any time, and to profit from a smart card (SIM) based secure handover between heterogeneous access networks, ensuring the highest data rate, relying on a single subscription. ***************** 7. International News ***************** Handsets Powered By China Chip Available In June

China's first locally-patented 2G/2.5G handset chip will soon be available to handset makers, reports the Shanghai Morning Post. Shanghai-based developer Spreadtrum Communications said the chip is smaller in size and lower in cost compared to international competitors. Spreadtrum claims the chip has advantages in integration, power consumption and systems software. Handsets powered by the newly-developed chips will be available on the market from June. Their prices will be 20 percent cheaper than similar mobile handsets. Pacific Epoch --> http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/efgp0CWyaL0Emn0BHii0Am
