Viewpoints *********** See The World Through Cell-Phone Cameras By Andrew Burt, Director, Toshiba America Electronic Components The availability of low-cost, low-power CMOS imaging modules helped to fuel a mania for camera-enabled cell phones in Japan. That mania proved to be contagious for the rest of the world. Of course, the Japanese may credit teenage girls for starting... News ******** Wi-Fi Router Integrated Onto SOC Broadcom Corp. just announced the release of a highly integrated Wi-Fi router processor, enabling manufacturers to build networking products that address the performance, cost and security needs of small businesses. The new AirForce BCM5350 with Sentry5 technology combines 54g wireless LAN routing, Fast Ethernet switching, accelerated virtual private network (VPN) security, and a MIPS(R) instruction set processor into a single system-on-a-chip (SoC). The company claims that this high level of integration eliminates the need for multiple components while delivering the performance and security previously available from devices at up to twice the cost. Broadcom --> http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/egBk0CWyaL0Emn0BIsA0Ac ******** 3. News ******** BREW Developer Awards Announced Qualcomm Inc., recently announced the finalists for its annual BREW Developer Awards, which recognizes outstanding applications developed in the past year. The company will reveal the award-winning applications during the BREW 2004 Developers Conference, June 7-9, held at the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina. The awards recognizes applications in six different categories. The finalists were chosen by an anonymous panel of industry experts based on several criteria including originality, ease-of-use, "cool factor" and features. BREW --> http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/egBk0CWyaL0Emn0BIsB0Ad ******** 4. News ******* System Level Tools Help Low Power Designs Designing for lower power has become a critical pre-requisite for a chip's technical and commercial success. To meet the low power challenge, ChipVision Design Systems AG has developed a system-level design tool called ORINOCO. This tool provides automated power estimation and optimizations that the company claims can reduce design time by weeks or months versus similar techniques done at lower levels of abstraction. The company's tool enables estimation of the power consumption at the system/algorithmic level, where the greatest reductions in power - often 75% or more - can be achieved. News ******** Cattle May Soon Wear RFID Tags Every cow in the United States may someday have a unique ID number. After a Holstein cow tested positive for mad cow disease in Washington last year, the federal government stepped up efforts to more efficiently track animal diseases. The USDA says it will be "technology neutral" about the tracking system. However, RFID, or radio frequency identification, is now leading the herd among tracking technologies. These radio ID tags are now widely used in everything from tracking merchandise at Wal-Mart to tracking children at an amusement park in Denmark. Several countries already have mandatory tracking systems. Australia's National Livestock Identification, which uses RFID tags, has reported virtually no malfunctions since it began in January. International News ***************** EDA Company First To Open R&D Site In Russia Cadence Design Systems, Inc., just announced the opening of its first office in Moscow. Ray Bingham, former chairman of the Board of the Directors of Cadence, was in Moscow to unveil the new facility, which was the first electronic design automation (EDA) research and development center opened in Russia by an overseas company. The Moscow office will house more than 70 employees, who will focus on EDA tool development, including methodology services. It also will serve as Cadence's Russian center for training, scientific endeavors and large-scale educational programs, as well as local customer support. International News ***************** Wireless Procurement Set To Rise In Taiwan Linksys, a division of Cisco Systems, has set its procurement budget for Taiwan at more than NT$17 billion this year, up 30% from last year, according to company president and CEO Victor Tsao. The company is working to build closer relationships with Taiwanese companies, Tsao added. Sources stated that the suppliers to likely benefit most would be CyberTAN Technology, GemTek Technology and Sercomm. Currently Linksys' total revenue proportions outside North America have risen 15-20% with the European market in the midst of its seasonal growth rate of 50%. The company estimates that worldwide proportions will see an increase to around 30% by 2005. In addition, Linksys is expanding its presence in China this year by setting up a repair service center for home network products in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. New Books ************** The Design Warrior's Guide to FPGAs: Devices, Tools and Flows Author: Clive Maxfield, EDA industry consultant, EDN columnist, and Embedded Systems Guru Publisher: Elsevier, Newnes Imprint ISBN: 0-7506-7604-3 In this book, the author covers all the issues of interest to designers working with, or contemplating a move to, Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) in their product designs. While other books cover fragments of FPGA technology or applications this is the first to focus exclusively and comprehensively on FPGA use for embedded systems. http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/egBk0CWyaL0Emn0BIsF0Ah Functional Verification Coverage Measurement and Analysis Author: Andrew Piziali Publisher: Kluwer Academic ISBN: 1-4020-8025-5 This book addresses the subject of coverage measurement and analysis, a means of quantitatively assessing functional verification progress. Using the techniques described in this book, they will learn how to build a toolset which, when applied to the verification of their device, allows them to know how close they are to functional closure. http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/egBk0CWyaL0Emn0BIsG0Ai ************************ ADVERTISEMENT ************************** Missed the Embedded Systems Conference?
