As the technology that supports wireless-local-area networks (WLANs) matures, so does the need for comprehensive testing. Multi-standard products based upon 802.11a, b, and g require measurement systems that can test all of the protocol variations. Tektronix Corp. is helping to meet this need for compliance with all current WLAN standards. Its solution comes in the form of the WCA11G Signal Analysis software package. This tool automates key measurements, interprets erratic or incomplete data, and delivers multi-domain analysis tools for solving complex design problems.

Timewise, designers and testers alike will benefit by having a single tool for the measurement and analysis of the 802.11a, b, and g standards. In addition, the WCA11G package is sophisticated enough to analyze data packets with incomplete framing structures. Such packets are common in early prototypes of user equipment and system elements. If the packet's preamble is missing, many test instruments won't be able to synchronize with the data. The WCA11G promises to interpolate the absent information and synchronize properly with flawed signals.

The software package also deconstructs the relatively complex OFDM signals that are used in 802.11a and g. This capability is a prerequisite for measuring amplifier linearity. The WCA11G software automatically identifies and sets up for the type of modulation that's embodied in the signal. The engineer can therefore save time. He or she is saved from having to configure modulation characteristics into the real-time spectrum analyzer in advance.

The software is now available with the Tektronix WCA330 and WCA380 Wireless Communications Analyzers. The WCA11G starts at $5000 with a six-week delivery from receipt of order. Please visit the Tektronix web site for more information.
