*********** 1. Viewpoint *********** T1 Platforms Help Wireless Carriers Face E-911 Mandates By Brian Sherk Doing more with less has become a fact of life in today's economy. For the wireless carrier, this order can be tough to fill. It's especially hard to do when changes in regulations mean extra services, such as Enhanced 911 (E-911). To make matters... ********************** 2. "Off The Cuff" Column ********************** Why Am I Changing WSD Update? By John Blyler, Executive Editor

Electronic Newsletters (e-Newsletters or just e-letters) are a funny kind of critter. These publications exist between the highly organized world of print magazines and the unstructured yet expanding constellation of weblogs. Unfortunately, most e-letters tend to be modeled after the world of print. In so doing, they completely miss the advantages of the Internet medium.

Only in the last few years have traditional journalists and print publications begun to appreciate the uniqueness of the Internet. While traditional print pubs are now slowly moving toward e-pubs for a variety of reasons (see OJR link below), most still seem to miss the essential differences between print and electronic mediums. The exceptions are those publications that exist only on the Internet, such as Salon and the AlwaysOn Network. These players know that experienced online readers expect e-pubs to take full advantage of the Internet medium. These readers want information that is direct and succinct. They want everything in the online venue to be only a mouse click away. Typically, online readers are well informed and want to share their opinions. They recognize that new forms of expression are needed to convey messages in electronic formats. In response, they have created their own language of emoticons (smileys J), abbreviations (IMHO) and other literary constructs. Finally, while many use the Internet for research, all online readers seem to enjoy quick visits to the unusual and bizarre websites and weblogs offered in cyberspace.

Smart editors understand the expectations and nuances of their readership. That is why successful e-letters make generous use of URLs, either for quick access to reference material or for fun. Forums and other outlets for reader expressions are provided on related websites. While vital information is always the primary consideration, useful e-letters also include links to some of the more unusual websites and weblogs offered on the Internet.

Who hasn't guessed where I'm going with this discussion? That's right; this e-letter is changing to make better use of both the Internet medium and the global readership that it fosters. The content of the e-letter is being expanded to cover more international news, products and events. Webinars will be added to the Happenings Section. Also, each week will feature a unique weblog site or two for your enjoyment.

Format changes will include a more generous use of URLs. Viewpoint pieces will now be linked to our newly redesigned web page. Poll questions will be offered on the WSD website, with results presented in the e-letter. Look for a roundup of the discussions taking place on the WSD Forums page. I may even try to produce a few issues in a truly weblog format (watch for this experiment in the upcoming "April Fools" issue).

Have I forgotten any changes that your might like to see? If so, then please dash off a note on our Forums page or send me an email at: mailto:j.blyler@penton.com ========== Related Links: WSD Homepage --> http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/eeLl0CWyaL0Emn0BEwr0Aa PlanetEE Forums --> http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/eeLl0CWyaL0Emn0BCIN0AC OJR: Cutting the Cord With Print --> http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/eeLl0CWyaL0Emn0BEws0Ab Salon --> http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/eeLl0CWyaL0Emn0JQf0Aj AlwaysOn --> http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/eeLl0CWyaL0Emn0BEwt0Ac

******** 3. News ******** FPGAs Integrated Into New High-Definition Satellite Receiver

Altera Corporation recently announced that Motorola, Inc. Broadband Communications Sector has selected Altera Cyclone FPGAs for use in the new Motorola Digital Satellite Receiver (DSR) 500 family of high-definition (HD) satellite receivers. The Motorola DSR500 is a next-generation high-end consumer satellite receiver with integrated HD decoder, supporting a wide array of home entertainment options, including HD-capable TVs and monitors, standard television sets, VCRs and home theater systems. The Altera Cyclone FPGA implements critical functions in the DSR500 family of products, bridging advanced decoder and processor circuits and managing bandwidth from the front-end satellite tuners and demodulators. ******** 4. News ******** Electronic Markets Find Stability

A general pickup in demand for electronics equipment, even in the long-suffering networking and telecomm sector, combined with the economic recovery, has brought stability to the Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) and Original Design Manufacturing (ODM) markets. This stability is paving the way for more vigorous growth in 2004, according to iSuppli Corp. EMS/ODM revenue will rise to $147 billion in 2004, up 15 percent from $127.9 billion in 2003, iSuppli predicts. This follows a growth rate of 9.5 percent in 2003. iSuppli data suggests that the EMS/ODM revenue is projected to increase at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 11.9 percent through 2007. This sustained market growth comes in stark contrast to the declines in revenue in 2001 and 2002. ISupply --> http://lists.planetee.com/cgi-bin3/DM/y/eeLl0CWyaL0Emn0BCl80AP

******** 5. News ******** High Speed Divider Family Accepts Inputs to 18 GHz

Hittite Microwave announces a family of new InGaP HBT MMIC prescalers which operate from DC (with a square wave input) to 18 GHz. The ultra low additive SSB Phase Noise, -151 dBc/Hz @ 100 kHz offset, make this family of dividers well suited for commercial PLL applications such as VSAT, point to point radio, fiber optic, and test equipment markets as well as military PLL systems. The HMC492LP3, HMC493LP3, and the HMC494LP3 offer divide ratios of 2, 4, and 8 respectively, and are housed in 3x3mm 16 lead (LP3) QFN surface mount packages sharing a common pin assignment.
