As Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) networks are rolled out across the U.S., the demand will grow for related receivers and measurement systems. Luckily, some companies are already prepared for this trend. For example, Dynamic Telecommunications (DTI)—a PCTEL company that specializes in wireless intelligence—recently came to market with a GSM scanning receiver. Known as the SeeGull LX, it flaunts co-channel-interference (C/I) measurements, faster scanning speeds, and spectrum analysis.

This GSM scanning receiver provides crucial capabilities for both carriers and service providers. Using it, vendors can test and optimize their wireless networks. The receiver also improves channel-scanning rates while enabling multi-tasking.

To wireless carriers, network parameters have only been visible through scanning receivers. Currently, they use DTI's scanners to acquire network performance data through drive tests, site surveys, base-station monitoring, and network-coverage analysis. Now, the SeeGull LX GSM scanning receiver is enhancing the carrier's visibility into the network. It simplifies both troubleshooting and network optimization.

Among the receiver's critical features are reliable C/I measurements and the accurate identification of base-station identification codes (BSICs). The SeeGull LX GSM scanning receiver also establishes a new standard for the identification of critical system messages (including Cell ID, Mobile Country Code, Mobile Network Code, and Location Area Code). Mobile test phones only provide these messages on the one-channel Best Server. But DTI's GSM receiver can decode them on all channels. Wireless operators use these system messages to identify the origin of the RF signals that are transmitted in their networks.

This latest GSM receiver from DTI has a scanning speed of 500 channels/s. It gives the user the ability to perform multiple functions simultaneously. By comparison, other tools only support one function at a time. This receiver also promises to provide higher measurement accuracy and sensitivity; better immunity to interference; and increased sensitivity to BSIC decoding.

The receiver's built-in spectrum-analyzer feature provides an effective means of detecting and troubleshooting frequency-related problems. The available option of Distance Based Sampling (DBS) offers a complete solution for model tuning during network deployment and optimization. The receiver has an optional built-in Global Positioning System (GPS). It's available as a single-band (850, 900, 1800, or 1900 MHz) or dual-band (850/1900 or 900/1800 MHz) receiver.

The SeeGull LX GSM scanning receiver is available now. For more information about product pricing or to order, contact DTI at the numbers listed below.
