For the first time, manufacturers of human-interface devices (HIDs) can go wireless without sacrificing performance. Thanks to Cypress Semiconductor's CY694X WirelessUSB product family, makers of PC mice, keyboards, and gaming consoles can minimize development time and cut their bill of materials and power requirements. Because they're not resorting to the usual 27-MHz technology, they also protect performance.

Operating at 2.4 GHz, the CY694X can connect as many as seven devices up to 10 m apart. Aside from targeting PC mice and keyboards, WirelessUSB is an ideal solution for the gaming industry. With an average latency of less than 8 ms with four concurrent devices connected, Wireless-USB stands up to even the most rigorous gaming environments. In addition, the products require few external components. Operating systems that support USB don't even require new drivers.

The CY694X supports seven nodes per host and multiple separate links in the same space. Using a frequency-hopping spread-spectrum (FHSS) technology, it makes it possible to use multiple Wireless-USB devices in crowded offices and classrooms without interference between devices. Advanced power management enables batteries to last up to six months in typical keyboard applications. It also includes security features. Bidirectional communication makes it possible to encrypt transmitted data.

The first devices in the CY694X family are sampling now. Production quantities are scheduled for this quarter. The WirelessUSB devices are priced at $3.92 in high volume. A development kit with reference designs also is planned for release.
