Whether it's in handset or telephony applications, voice continues to be an important component of wireless communications. Both single- and dual-channel voice-codec chips are a key element in these wireless systems. But these chips also are susceptible to power-supply noise interference. Plus, they don't always come in the necessary voltage ranges. In an effort to address these challenges, Winbond Electronics Corp. America has introduced a series of dual-channel voice-codec chips. The W682310 (3-V) and the W682510 (5-V) chips complete Winbond's family of voice-codec solutions that target the enterprise, handset, automotive, telematics, VoIP, speakerphones, and PABX. These dual-channel voice-codec ICs promise to provide analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversion, industry specifications G.711 and G.712 ITU-T, improved performance, and competitive pricing.

The W682x10 series offers all of the features of Winbond's family of voice-codec solutions. The W682310 is pin compatible with the OKI MSM7704-01. The W682510 is pin compatible with the OKI MSM7533V. The ICs are offered with a wide variety of power options: 2.7 to 3. 8 V (W682310) and 4.5 to 5.5 V (W682510). They have a typical power dissipation of 22 mW (W682310) and 35 mW (W682510). Their standby is 2.1 mW (W682310 and W682510). In power-down mode, the devices promise 3 µW (W682310) and 5 µW (W682510). They are offered in a variety of packaging options. The W682310 is offered in SOP24 and SSOP20 packaging. The W682510 comes in SPO24, SSOP20, and PDIP20 packaging.

The W682x10 series is currently sampling. Volume production is expected in the third quarter of this year. The chips are priced at $1.90 for 25,000.
