Some experts predict that the next revolution in handheld gaming will take place on wireless platforms. The GoForce 3D 4800, NVIDIA's latest wireless media processor, is set to provide a foundation for that revolution by integrating highly realistic 3D graphics, megapixel still imaging, and high-quality video capture and playback.

The processor enables players to enjoy an intense gaming experience on mobile handsets by boosting 3D performance by over 40% compared with the previous generation of media processors. A fully programmable pixel shader, four- and eight-bit texture palettes, and support for up to six simultaneous textures allows the graphics engine to depict virtual worlds in vivid detail. The device's dedicated 3D hardware processor renders 100 Mpixels/s and draws up to 1.5 million triangles/s, providing fluid motion of characters and objects.

To capture high-quality photos, the GoForce 3D 4800 processor includes a JPEG hardware encoder that's capable of capturing images with up to 3-Mpixel (2048 × 1536) resolution. NVIDIA's Fotopack technology automatically maximizes JPEG compression to allow users to store up to 3.5X more photos in the limited memory space on a handset.

Thanks to an embedded-hardware MPEG-4 codec, the processor enables OEMs to add high-quality, camcorder-like video capability. The codec supports VGA-resolution, MPEG-4 video at up to 30 frames/s. It allows users to play VGA-resolution video stored on an SD card at up to 30 frames/s.

Long battery life is essential in handsets, and the GoForce 3D 4800 processor uses NVIDIA's nPower technology to extend power efficiency by up to 20 times. It does so by clocking each module in the processor at a different optimized frequency.
