Now, Wind River Systems is impacting the communications market in a big way with the introduction of its reference design release of Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition.

This platform includes a complete Linux reference file system with a rich set of networking middleware and applications. Because the platform is built on the Linux 2.6 kernel with Open Source Development Lab Carrier Grade Linux 2.0 specifications, it meets the high availability, reliability, and security requirements of today's carrier-grade networking equipment.

Wind River now offers integrated platforms for network equipment with support for both the VxWorks real-time operating system and Linux. As a result, equipment OEMs will be able to more easily implement and deploy carrier-grade telecommunications equipment based on a dual-operating-system strategy. They'll also gain the ability to leverage software across multiple projects and operating systems.

The Wind River Platform for Network Equipment, Linux Edition also leverages ATCA-based commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) solutions for control and management-plane applications in carrier-grade network equipment. Additionally, it supports TIPC—a standards-based inter-process communication mechanism that connects with Wind River Platform for Network Equipment and Wind River's General Purpose Platform, VxWorks Edition.

The platform enables the flexible use of open source for device development with a tested, open, and expandable Linux cross-build system.
